Many characters in this play are involved in power struggles. For example: Prospero v. Antonio: Antonio has usurped Prospero as Duke of Milan, so Prospero creates the tempest to shipwreck them on the island and get his title back. Caliban & Ariel v. Prospero: Both were enslaved by Prospero upon his arrival at their home island. Antonio & Sebastian v. Alonso: Antonio encourages Sebastian to Alonso and take and assume the crown. Caliban, Trinculo, & Stephano v. Prospero: Trinculo and Stephano take advange of Caliban's hatred of Caliban and enlist him to aid in their efforts to steal the island from Prospero. |
